The format

What is an hourglass race?

Every lap of the 5 km loop starts on the hour. You have 60 minutes to finish it. Whatever is left of the hour is rest time, then the bell rings and the next lap begins. Your category sets how many laps you run: 5, 8 or 10.

I finish a lap in 35 minutes. What happens next?

You rest at the race village for the remaining 25 minutes, then start the next lap with everyone else when the bell rings. You cannot start early.

What if I miss the bell or run a lap over 60 minutes?

Your race ends there. Your result shows the laps you completed, but you are not counted as a finisher.

How is the winner decided if everyone finishes at the same time?

By total running time: the sum of your lap times, not counting rest. The lowest total wins. If two runners tie, the faster final lap ranks higher.

What pace do I need?

To make the cut-off you need to run each 5 km within 60 minutes, which is 12 minutes per km. To leave yourself time to eat and rest, aim for 35 to 45 minutes per lap.

Can I change my distance on race day?

Not on race day. Before the event you can move to a shorter category, or to a longer one if places are available and you meet its eligibility (you pay the difference). See cancellations and changes.
